I Hate Technology… And I’m an IT guy

Does it have to be so frustrating? It drives me crazy, and I know how to fix these issues. I can hardly imagine what it’s like for everyone else.

In this ongoing series – I’m going to discuss common problems, why it drives me crazy, workarounds, and potential solutions. If you enjoy the Blog, like us on FaceBook. Here we go.

Things that drive me nuts:

Internet

Ubiquitous internet access is fantastic. It allows us to stay in touch, work on our business, and find out who died on Game of Thrones. But what happens when your internet is down, spotty, or problematic? This is by far, the most frustrating experience I hear from my business clients and home users. Why? Because everything needs internet access to work correctly, and troubleshooting Internet access problems is incredibly difficult for the typical end user.

Problem:

Internet Outage

Resolution:

As any 12 year old knows, when you have problems with the Internet, restart the router. This is honestly one of the first troubleshooting steps regardless of if you are a home user, or support hundreds of people in a business office. So why is this still a thing? ResetPlug is a hardware device that sits in between your router and electrical outlet and wirelessly monitors your internet connection. When it notices your internet going out, it will restart your router.

Smart.

But why don’t router manufactures incorporate that into the software? Why do we need to buy a separate piece of (expensive) hardware to accomplish something that could so easily be automated?

OK – I know there are geeks reading this that automatically reboot their router on a schedule via telnet script, but the average person doesn’t even know what those words mean, let alone how to do it. And besides, rebooting on a schedule is not the same as doing it automatically when needed. Seriously, it’s 2016. Why haven’t router manufactures done this yet?
